About The Film

The Row chronicles Tez Steinberg’s journey across the Pacific Ocean and the personal challenges that shaped him along the way.

Spanning five years of filming, the documentary weaves together two historic ocean crossings, 197 days alone at sea, and the story of a man who had never rowed, sailed, or spent meaningful time at sea before setting out.

More than an expedition film, The Row explores grief, resilience, and the search for healing in the face of life’s greatest challenges.

The Row began production in October 2022 and post-production began in November 2024 after Tez completed Expedition 2 and the team shot the final scene. The film makes use of archival footage that Tez shot in 2020 before he met the film team.

In Expedition 1, Tez used a simple setup with a single camera on at a time. But in Expedition 2, Tez brought 13 different cameras. When there was sufficient battery power available, Tez used a custom camera system designed by systems engineer Philip Scott Andrews, who previously designed camera systems for SpaceX and NASA astronauts. The custom system would activate and sync 3 GoPros at once to shoot scenes from multiple angles.

Expedition 1: 2 DJI Action Cams and 1 Sony A6700, all sponsored by Mik Stampe Fogh.

Expedition 2: 8 GoPro Hero 11s, 1 Insta360 X3, 2 Canon EOS R7s, 2 iPhone 14s.

Tez shot over 600 hours of footage while alone at sea. This constitutes about half of the final cut of The Row.

Adam Peters composed the score to The Row.
